Solis Marine provides both on-site and remote independent project management and technical advisory services to P&I clubs, hull and machinery underwriters, war risk insurers, cargo interests and vessel interests across the full lifecycle of a casualty – from first notification through to successful salvage or wreck removal and disposal.
Our team is available around the clock, every day of the year, and can deploy to any location at short notice.
Our casualty management services cover the full range of salvage and wreck removal scenarios.
Immediate casualty response
We attend casualties anywhere in the world without delay. Our involvement at the early stages of an incident may include advising on whether salvage assistance is required, which contractor is best suited to the circumstances, and what resources should be deployed. Every casualty is different – salvors may already be on site when we are instructed, or we may arrive ahead of them. In all cases, our aim is to provide the technical and operational advice that allows insurers and other parties to make informed decisions as early as possible.
Salvage management
We advise on all aspects of salvage contracts, including Lloyd’s Open Form (LOF) and the SCOPIC clause. Where the SCOPIC clause is invoked, our Special Casualty Representatives (SCRs) are available to be appointed to represent all salved interests, working alongside the salvage master and contractors to monitor operations and report independently to all parties.
Oil spill and pollution response
We manage oil spill and pollutant response operations on behalf of P&I clubs, vessel owners, government agencies and other instructing parties, coordinating both offshore and shoreline response and acting as the point of contact with port authorities, environmental agencies and government bodies. Our experience covers a wide range of pollution incidents, from fuel oil and cargo spills in busy port areas to more complex scenarios requiring coordination across multiple jurisdictions.
Wreck removal
We manage wreck removal projects from the tendering stage through to successful removal and disposal. This includes preparing invitation to tender documentation, evaluating contractor proposals, reviewing proposed removal methodologies, overseeing execution and signing off on completion. Where we are engaged throughout a project, our involvement can continue during each phase or when key milestones are approaching and taking place.

Complex and unusual incidents
Our team has advised clients on casualties arising in politically sensitive and hostile environments, including incidents involving deliberate vessel damage. We are experienced in managing the additional complexity that such cases present, including engagement with war risk insurers and relevant authorities.
Commercial and cost management
Active cost oversight is a core part of our project management role. We monitor expenditure throughout an operation, review contractor invoices and ensure that costs reflected are accurate and properly supported. We also provide technical and commercial input to average adjusters and claims handlers, helping clients maintain control of costs and supporting well-informed decision-making at every stage of a claim.
Technical Depth
The integration of naval architecture into our casualty team is a material advantage in the management of complex operations. Our naval architects are engaged from first notification, not brought in as a separate service at a later stage. From the earliest point of a response – often when little more than draught readings and basic vessel particulars are available – they can provide preliminary assessments of grounding forces, structural strength, residual stability and towing requirements. Those assessments are refined continuously as more information becomes available, and our team works closely with Class emergency response services whenever they are engaged.
Our naval architects also bring experience of Lloyd’s Open Form arbitration proceedings, where technical evidence of vessel condition and the salvage risks involved during operations plays a central role. That experience informs the quality and rigour of the analysis we provide from the outset of every case.
For wreck removal projects requiring more complex structural or hydrodynamic analysis, our engineering division is available to provide specialist support.

Our Team
Our casualty management team is composed of master mariners, marine engineers and naval architects with extensive practical experience across a wide range of vessel types and incident scenarios. We have five members of the Lloyd’s Panel of Special Casualty Representatives, based across our UK, Singapore and China offices. They are supported by a broader team of salvage consultants and naval architects who attend on site on a regular basis, providing the depth of resource needed to manage prolonged, multi-phase operations without over-reliance on any one individual.
Independence
Solis Marine is owned by its directors and is independent of any shipowner, insurer or Class society.
Global Reach
Solis Marine has long-established offices in the UK, Singapore and China, which together provide coverage across the major maritime insurance and shipping centres. In recent years we have significantly extended our geographic footprint to include South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia to strengthen our global position.
Our Jakarta office, opened in early 2026, provides permanent in-country coverage in Indonesia – one of the most active wreck removal jurisdictions in the region and an area in which we have attended a significant number of casualties over many years. A naval architect and a salvage consultant are based there full-time, supported by our Singapore team.
Our Johor Bahru office serves the Johor Strait and Port of Tanjung Pelepas corridor, one of the busiest maritime areas in Southeast Asia. The office provides dedicated local response capability, again backed by the expertise of our Singapore team.
Our Durban office reflects the growing strategic importance of South Africa as a casualty response location. The significant increase in vessel traffic routing via the Cape of Good Hope in recent years has created a corresponding demand for reliable, locally based consultancy services in the region. We have experienced master mariners and a marine engineer available in South Africa.
Beyond our own offices, the Solis Marine Alliance extends our reach into further geographies through a network of carefully selected partner organisations. Alliance partners active in the casualty and salvage field include Myrcator Marine & Cargo Solutions(Middle East), Survey Association of 1914 (Scandinavia), Marine Experts Argentina (South America and particularly river salvage operations), South Maritime Solutions (New Zealand and the Pacific) and ARC-Assure (Australia and Southeast Asia). Each partner shares our commitment to independent, high-quality service and provides local knowledge and attendance capability backed by Solis Marine’s international resources.
